Joy-filled purpose through music
Soprano Rachel Sitomer is a dynamic artist whose prismatic life and zest for authentic human connection permeates every aspect of her career.
Whether on the concert stage, fully costumed in the opera theater, behind the podium as a church music director, or in front of an audience of rambunctious school children, Rachel brings her conscientious, vivacious personality to all of her pursuits. A recent winner of the 2022 Mixtape Recital Series Competition in Washington, DC, Rachel was invited to curate and present a recital entitled Motherhood (Instructions Not Included), which has now been presented for multiple audiences in a variety of venues.
Of her premiere of his set, “What’s for Dinner?” – a cornerstone of Sitomer’s Motherhood (Instructions Not Included) recital program – composer and bass baritone Sean Pflueger says, “Rachel…sings beautifully with impressive clarity of diction. She balanced the vocal and acting demands of the cycle perfectly. The audience was laughing along with her great comic delivery. She proved that she is more than a singer with a beautiful line and tone; she’s got comic chops, too.”
She has earned acclaim for roles as diverse as Monica (The Medium), Papagena and Pamina alike (Die Zauberflöte), Gilda (Rigoletto), and Zerlina (Don Giovanni). She was also selected as a performer in a masterclass with internationally acclaimed soprano Lisette Oropesa, for which she performed Ophelia’s iconic mad scene from Ambrose Thomas’s Hamlet.
A passionate ambassador for the operatic art form, Rachel serves as a Teaching Artist for Opera Baltimore, presenting a show entitled “What is Opera?” to school students. She also has been heavily involved in their newest program, entitled “Voice Your Story,” which encourages self-expression in Baltimore City kids by teaching them mindful breathing techniques and creating mini-operas based on their own lives and backgrounds. She is also an active member of the Washington, DC chapter of Opera On Tap.

Motherhood (Instructions Not Included)
Winner of the 2022 Mixtape Recital Series Competition (Washington, DC), Motherhood (Instructions Not Included) is a cabaret-style romp through the highs, lows, and everywhere-in-betweens of motherhood. Through music and the sharing of her own personal stories, Rachel offers her unique takes on the trappings and tribulations that come with being a mom and a professional artist in today’s society. Just like motherhood, this concert is at times deeply touching, at others laugh-out-loud hilarious, and always full of unexpected moments. These stories and songs resonate with audiences across demographics. First premiered in Annapolis, MD by Mixtape Recital Series in 2022, Motherhood (Instructions Not Included) was most recently presented to great acclaim in May of 2023 by Live Arts Maryland.
Featuring a range of styles from musical theater to classical (along with a sing-along of “Baby Beluga” by Raffi), interwoven with personal motherhood stories, this eclectic concert encourages an intimate connection between audience and performer.
Motherhood is an intensely personal experience, but this isn’t just a cabaret for moms – there is something for everyone in this performance. For better or for worse, everyone has a mom; if they’re not in your life, maybe there is someone who serves as a mother figure to you, or maybe you are a mother or mother figure to someone else. Together, we delve into the innately human urge to care for others, along with the difficulties and triumphs that come along with loving another person in the context of nurturing them.
